Layer: ArtificialReefs_202601_Update (ID: 0)

Name: ArtificialReefs_202601_Update

Display Field: NAME

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon

Description: This data layer represents the polygon delineations of Mid-Atlantic artificial reefs. They were compiled from various sources, including digital data received from and/or published by state agencies and lat/long coordinates of reef corners found on public web sites. These polygons represent general areas where artificial reef material has been placed; generally the entirety of the polygon is not all artificial reef.Chronology of the data compilation:Original 2010 data, 2019 updates and original metadata generated by The Nature Conservancy.February 2023, GIS data and metadata updated by the MARCO Portal using the NOAA Electronic Navigational Chart (ENCs) web services as the map source. EDITS: 1) added a polygon area in Delaware Bay, named 'DE13' in the data, 2) modified the shape of the 'Wildwood' polygon off the Atlantic coast of southern New Jersey. January 2026, GIS data and metadata were updated using the latest available data as of December 2025. All available GIS data published by state agencies in the MARCO 5-state area (NY, NJ, DE, MD, VA) were reviewed. EDITS: 1) New York: 4 new artificial reefs were added: Huntington/Oyster Bay Reef, Port Jefferson/Mount Sinai Reef, Mattituck Reef, Sixteen Fathom Reef; 9 artificial reef delineations in the Portal data were revised using NY's data: Smithtown Reef, Shinnecock Reef, Moriches Reef, Yellowbar Reef, Kismet Reef, Fire Island Reef, Hempstead Reef, McAllister Grounds, Rockaway Reef. Data source: NYS Department of Environmental Artificial Reef Program (NYSDEC); 2) Virginia: 2 new reef areas were added: Newport News Middle Ground Reef, East Ocean View Reef.
