Service Description: This GIS layer represents outfall locations in the MARCO five-state coastal watersheds and their respective discharge flow from various facilities. Each point is attributed with facility information, geographic location, status, and 2019 average discharge flow values in millions of gallons per day (MGD), which were obtained from the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Pollutant Loading Report (DMR) online web resources. As per the EPA, “The DMR Pollutant Loading Report presents detailed information about a single NPDES permit and pollutant loadings data by reporting year. The facility information page also presents related information from other data sources (such as Toxics Release Inventory and Clean Watershed Needs Survey), as well as links to other reports and features within the Water Pollutant Loading Tool and ECHO.”
To prepare the data for display, the MARCO Portal compiled the discharge flow values for each facility’s outfall pipe using the DMR and classified the points into five classes using natural breaks. Portal users can click on each facility’s outfall location point to see these attributes. Also included in the attributes are two web URLs to link to the facilities’ Pollutant Loading Reports and Facility Detail Reports for additional information.
Wastewater outfall locations and their respective facilities and facility pipes in the MARCO five-state area coastal watersheds (coastal waters) were developed and compiled in a geographic information system (GIS) by NOAA Office for Coastal Management, utilizing EPA Enforcement and Compliance History Online (ECHO) information, as part of the larger dataset of wastewater treatment and discharges to or near coastal waters for the United States Atlantic coastal region/coastal waters.
