description: This data set represents the most recent changes for the Wind Development Planning Areas in the Atlantic. Wind Planning Areas in this dataset represent different types of announcements within the US Federal Register (FR) that can be used to show the current status of an area that is being considered for wind power development. Additionally, unsolicited proposed lease areas that have not yet began the leasing process are also included. Previous Wind Planning Areas that are now designated as leases can be found in the BOEM Lease Areas feature class.

Data source: BOEM; web service published by the MARCO Portal

For the latest BOEM feature service, please refer to: https://services1.arcgis.com/Hp6G80Pky0om7QvQ/ArcGIS/rest/services/BOEM_Wind_Planning_and_Lease_Areas/FeatureServer

Web service update, 1/11/2023: Gulf of Maine

On January 10, 2023, BOEM announced a series of in-person and virtual meetings to solicit feedback on the next steps for the Gulf of Maine.

In August 2022, the Department of the Interior announced a “Request for Interest” (RFI) to gauge whether there is commercial interest in obtaining wind energy leases within an area in the Gulf of Maine consisting of about 13.7 million acres.

BOEM used information gained through public comment and industry nominations on the RFI, as well as spatial analysis advanced in partnership with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Center for Coastal and Ocean Science (NCCOS) and reduced the original RFI area by about 27% to 9.9 million acres. The reduced area, or draft Call Area, can be viewed at BOEM's Renewable Energy Gulf of Maine website: https://www.boem.gov/renewable-energy/state-activities/maine/gulf-maine .
