This layer represents marine mammal strandings from Maine to Virginia for the 2000-20 time
period. These data are a subset of the larger dataset maintained by the NOAA Marine Mammal
Health and Stranding Response Program.
<br></br>
Data have been collected over the past 100 years by members of the U.S. National Marine
Mammal Stranding Network on stranded cetaceans and pinnipeds (excluding walrus) along U.S.
coasts under the oversight of the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service. Stranding network
members are authorized government employees or organizations with Stranding Agreements
issued under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Response to species listed under the
Endangered Species Act is conducted under the authority of a scientific research and
enhancement permit.
<br></br>
Data are gathered using a series of forms that collect valuable stranding information through a
process known as Level A data collection. Stranding network responders use these forms to
collect basic information on stranding events as well as morphology, life history, biology, and
general health.
<br></br>
Scientists and natural resource managers use the information from strandings to help promote
the conservation of marine mammal species, as well as to respond to and mitigate threats to
marine mammal populations. Individual stranding events are documented, providing important
insight into natural history, life history, and health of species that can be cryptic and difficult to
study. Long-term data collection allows for analysis of trends, and informs conservation and
management efforts.
<br></br>
NOAA maintains a tabular dataset containing the species, date of initial observation, location of
stranding, condition at initial observation, sex, age class, and condition/determination for all
Level A strandings. This dataset, supplied by NOAA, was processed from tabular to geographic
information systems (GIS) point file format by the MARCO Portal and prepared for visualization
in partnership with the Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Program.
Attributes shown on the Portal are:
<br></br>
NatlDBNum: database number<br>
ConfCode: confidence code<br>
SpeciesID: species identification number<br>
ComName: common name<br>
Genus: genus<br>
Species: species<br>
County: county<br>
State: state<br>
ObsDate: observation date (year-month-day)<br>
ObsStatus: observation status<br>
SpeciesCategory: species category<br>
<br></br>
Data disclaimer/caveat: These data may contain errors or may be missing records. These data
are a subset of information contained in the NOAA National Marine Mammal Health and
Stranding Response Database. In some cases, further information on particular stranding
events may be obtained by contacting the stranding network organization that responded.
Please acknowledge the National Marine Mammal Stranding Network in any use of these data.
