Data were compiled by Teresa Schwemmer for the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Acidification Network (MACAN). They are presented in this web service by the Mid-Atlantic Ocean Data Portal to show monthly acidification measurements for a particular year and month.

The compiled dataset maps show carbonate chemistry measurements from ship- and shore-based sampling programs in the Mid-Atlantic region. All data were collected using best practices methods for ocean acidification monitoring, including sampling, measurements, and QA/QC (Dickson et al., 2007). Only datasets from programs with three or more years of sampling were used. Additionally, all datasets have at least the following parameters:

• Temperature

• Salinity

• Pressure

• Two or more of: total alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon, pH

These parameters, as well as nutrient concentrations when available, were used to calculate all remaining carbonate chemistry parameters and their error values in the program CO2Sys v3.0. All carbonate chemistry parameters are reported at in situ temperature and pressure. Seasonal groupings were determined based on monthly mean temperatures, grouping adjacent months with the most similar temperatures into a season.
