"serviceDescription": "This layer represents marine mammal strandings from Maine to Virginia for the 2000-20 time\nperiod. These data are a subset of the larger dataset maintained by the NOAA Marine Mammal\nHealth and Stranding Response Program.\n
<\/br>\nData have been collected over the past 100 years by members of the U.S. National Marine\nMammal Stranding Network on stranded cetaceans and pinnipeds (excluding walrus) along U.S.\ncoasts under the oversight of the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service. Stranding network\nmembers are authorized government employees or organizations with Stranding Agreements\nissued under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Response to species listed under the\nEndangered Species Act is conducted under the authority of a scientific research and\nenhancement permit.\n
<\/br>\nData are gathered using a series of forms that collect valuable stranding information through a\nprocess known as Level A data collection. Stranding network responders use these forms to\ncollect basic information on stranding events as well as morphology, life history, biology, and\ngeneral health.\n
<\/br>\nScientists and natural resource managers use the information from strandings to help promote\nthe conservation of marine mammal species, as well as to respond to and mitigate threats to\nmarine mammal populations. Individual stranding events are documented, providing important\ninsight into natural history, life history, and health of species that can be cryptic and difficult to\nstudy. Long-term data collection allows for analysis of trends, and informs conservation and\nmanagement efforts.\n
<\/br>\nNOAA maintains a tabular dataset containing the species, date of initial observation, location of\nstranding, condition at initial observation, sex, age class, and condition/determination for all\nLevel A strandings. This dataset, supplied by NOAA, was processed from tabular to geographic\ninformation systems (GIS) point file format by the MARCO Portal and prepared for visualization\nin partnership with the Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Program.\nAttributes shown on the Portal are:\n
